Did you have any idea that Monty was harboring this deep-seated, internalized homophobia when you played him the first two seasons?I definitely, especially looking back on a lot of his comments and the racy things he would say, you have to entertain the idea that he’s covering something up. What do Giles and Mary from Gogglebox do for a living and do they have a family? A lot of questions were unanswered so I had to answer them.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: When did you first learn that season 3 would explore Monty’s sexuality?TIMOTHY GRANADEROS: I was so excited to further develop his story and explore his home life and be integrated in the main storyline. The most shocking moment comes in the final episode when Monty violently beats Tyler in the men's toilet at school and then rapes him with the end of a mop. We don’t actually see his death onscreen, we only learn about it when Deputy Standall (Mark Pellegrino) says it in conversation. All 13 episodes of 13 Reasons Why Season 3 are available to stream on Netflix now. He orchestrates an intimidation campaign against those testifying in the court case into Hannah's death, including breaking in and damaging the pharmacy owned by Olivia Baker, sending a gun and a bullet to Alex, and attempting to hit Clay off his bike while driving in a car. He finally met this person who could bring out his vulnerability and they have these very intimate, close moments. Actors like Granaderos and Prentice have a really difficult task in bringing these monstrous characters to life.
And when did you find out he was going to be killed off in the season 3 finale?I didn’t find out Monty was going to be killed off until much later in the season. In the latest season, Monty is responsible for a lot of horrible things that happen to the other characters. But I would hope that through season 3, Montgomery is humanized in some way and you realize that he’s trying to sort through his own emotions and feelings. I made up this whole story about his relationship with his family and his friends and what was going on in his mind. Some people are having trouble understanding the difference between a character and an actor. But his own self-hatred and shame at giving in to his urges drove him to immediately beat the guy up. Some of Granaderos' cast mates have come to his defence.
Did you find it challenging not to judge or hate Monty after everything he’s done?Absolutely. I hope that people can, not sympathize but maybe understand him a little more even after his death. One of the kindest, most empathetic and talented artist I've ever met. Although we later learn that Monty comes from a violent and unstable home, there's no doubt that Monty is a truly cruel and evil character who's gone way past the point of redemption. When I found out, I was very excited for him, for Monty, and for me as an actor.
