At Liberty High, the students were in for a surprise. It was like we had telepathy in the character, which was really nice. At prom, Diego approaches Jessica and asks if they can talk. It seemed as if 13 Reasons Why was poised to address this topic when Diego was arrested and Justin was not, but the show barely acknowledges the deputy or his racism in the final two episodes of the season. In effect, 13 Reasons Why uses a racist cop as a catalyst and then fails to condemn or barely even acknowledge the racist law enforcement system that enables this overreach. To bring this character to life, I had to go back to my own high school traits and habits when it came to being an athlete, or possibly a meathead, or whatever, and then add my 13 Reasons Why story to it as well. Now I know some of you didn't like Monty, but I think we can all agree he deserved to live to see this day.
